The Annual Dinner took place on 12 January in Antwerp attended by members, Board members and friends of Hong Kong.
The annual CNY Reception 2011 was held on Friday, February 4th at the Albert Hall, Brussels. The evening was a great success and attended by BHKS members, friends of Hong Kong and many VIP's from the worlds of business, finance and government. Mr Trey Lee gave a cello concert at the Reception, there was the traditional Lion Dance and an impressive buffet of Chinese and Western food.
The Offscreen Film Festival in Brussels has become a must-see event on the Belgian cultural calendar for every film lover. This year, the organisers of the Offscreen Film Festival have included a unique selection of films produced by the Shaw Brothers studio. A total of 8 films were screened.
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Brussels supported the Offscreen Film Festival’s programme and co-organised a Hong Kong reception on this occasion. This reception took place on Thursday 17 February and was followed by the screening of “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” directed by film director Lau Kar-Leung and widely considered to be one of the greatest martial arts movies ever made. Hong Kong film expert Mr Tony Rayns introduced the film.
On the occasion of the visit of Ms Julia Leung, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the BHKS and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels co-organised a business luncheon on 16 March at the Hotel Renaissance in Brussels. During the luncheon, Ms Leung has spoken about the “Internationalisation of Renminbi and the Role of Hong Kong as an Offshore Renminbi Centre” .
The “Exclusief Night 2011” took place on 19 March 2011 at Kursaal Ostend. Miss Belgium 2000, Miss Joke van de Velde was the face of the event. Over 2000 Belgian VIPs from the worlds of business, political and entertainment circles were present. During the Exclusief Night, apart from the delicious Chinese food and spectacular cultural performance from Hong Kong, another highlight of the event was a Fashion Show of the collection of an internationally renowned Hong Kong fashion designer, Mr William Tang.
Professor K C Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region came to Brussels on June 8th to update senior government officials and business leaders of the exciting developments of the financial arena in Hong Kong. This Business Luncheon has been hosted by the Special Representative for the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union, Miss Mary Chow and the Chairman of the Belgium Hong Kong Society, Mr Piet Steel.
A Gala Dinner has been organised at 19:00 on Thursday, 8 September 2011 at Egmont Palace, Place du Petit Sablon/ Kleine Zavel 8, 1000 Brussels on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Belgium-Hong Kong Society. The Honourable Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Mr Didier Reynders, Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Belgium were the Guests of Honour. At the dinner, Mr Tsang shared with participants his vision on the developments of Hong Kong, the gateway to Mainland China, and the business opportunities for European businessmen. A HK student, Miss Fiona Foo, who graduated from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and was studying in the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, Belgium, was invited to stage a Marimba performance. The performance showcased HK’s cultural talents and was well-received by the audience. To celebrate its 25th anniversary this year, the Society invited political and business leaders who are friends of Hong Kong, as well as the Society members to this exclusive gala event. The 12th Hong Kong Forum was held on 29-30 November and followed by a side trip to Huizhou and Shenzhen on 1-2 December. Mr Georges Legros, Ms Sheila Arora and Mr Alexander De Beir attended the Forum. The BHKS won the Best Initiative Award for the Europe Region. A trophy and a cash award of HKD7,000 was presented to the BHKS at the HK Forum.
The film “Echoes of the Rainbow”, which won the Crystal Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 2010 has been the opening film for the HKFP in both Brussels and Antwerp. The two famous Hong Kong directors, Ms Mabel Cheung and Mr Alex Law attended the opening receptions. The one-off screening and reception were held in Bozar on 5 December. Over 140 guests including BHKS members attended.
The opening reception was held on 7 December at Cinema Zuid. The film “Echoes of the Rainbow”, which won the Crystal Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 2010 has been the opening film for the HKFP in both Brussels and Antwerp. Almost 100 guests including BHKS members, representatives from business and cultural sectors joined the event. The two directors, Mr Alex Law and Mabel Cheung attended both screenings and had sharing sessions with the audience.
